Pathways Article Summaries and References

Issue 18 - Summer 2008

Letter from the Editor

On May 8-11, 2008 in Philadelphia, a historic event called Freedom for Family Wellness took place. It was described as “a live version of Pathways magazine” It was powerful. It was cutting edge. It was a footprint in the world’s current shift to vitalism.

Leaders in their field came together to represent the true nature of wellness: the science of vitalism and its underlying connective philosophy. Each speaker was familiar with and very supportive of chiropractic, both by personal experience and professional interactions. Each speaker offered their unique mode of care from the essential theme of vitalism as defined here, “There is an inner intelligence in your body. It is conscious. It reflects the wisdom of the universe. It is at the core of our existence. It is the essence of who we are.”

That is why without having preplanned their presentations together, or having even met each other prior to the event, each presenter’s message weaved together with profound synchronicity and aligned purpose. This is how the audience of practitioners and parents were given the insight into our unified vision for family wellness.

Years ago, when first introduced to chiropractic, my husband and I came across a quote from BJ Palmer, the developer of chiropractic titled, “The Truth.” His words resonated with us then, and our realization that this vitalistic perspective was inherent in chiropractic was our major reason for pursuing chiropractic as a profession. Here it is now for you to read and realize the deep connection and role chiropractic has in the vitalistic wellness lifestyle.

The Truth

We chiropractors work with the subtle substance of the soul. We release the imprisoned impulse, the tiny rivulet of force that emanates from the mind and flows over the nerves to the cells, and stirs them into life. We deal with the magic power that transforms common food into living, loving, thinking clay; that robes the earth with beauty, and hues and scents the flowers with the glory of the air.

In the dim, dark, distant long ago, when the sun first bowed to the morning star, this power spoke and there was life; it quickened the slime of the sea and the dust of the earth and drove the cell to union with its fellows in countless living forms. Through eons of time it finned the fish and winged the bird and fanged the beast. Endlessly it worked, evolving its form until it produced the crowning glory of them all. With tireless energy it blows the bubble of each individual life and then silently, relentlessly dissolves the form, and absorbs the spirit into itself again.

-By B. J. Palmer, D.C., Ph.C.

Vitalism is the recognition, respect and trust in this intelligent power that animates the living world. Welcome parents and practitioners to Pathways, one more footprint in the raising of the consciousness.

Many blessings,
Jeanne Ohm, DC

Raising Generation Pax-Peace Begins with How We Parent…From the Very Beginning

From the Article:

A Universal Peace Offering

The universe has presented us with a powerful means of creating peace: the way we bring our children to life. Important principles about the influence of our thoughts and attitudes, together with leading-edge research, offer us an invitation to effect fundamental changes through conscious conception, pregnancy and childbirth—thus bringing into the world individuals who are “built for peace”!

Most of us would subscribe to the goal of a peaceful, ecologically sustainable world where our great-grandchildren can thrive. But that goal seems far out of reach. A joint study by Harvard and the World Health Organization finds that the U.S. suffers the highest rate of depression (9.6%, meaning more than 9 out of every 100 people) of the 14 surveyed countries, including war-torn Lebanon (6.6%) and povertystricken Nigeria (0.8%). The use of anti-depressants and other psychotropic drugs for school-aged children (and preschoolers!) has risen steadily over the past decade. Youth suicide has become the third leading cause of death in American 15–24 year olds, and has doubled in the 5-14 year old age group...

Yoga for Kids

From the Article:

Imagine you are up to bat, with two outs; it is the bottom of the ninth inning. Everyone you know is in the stands watching you. The pressure is unbearable. Will you hit the ball or strike out? This can be an overwhelming feeling for anyone, especially a child.

Yoga, on the other hand, is a totally non-competitive, healthy sport. I have been teaching kids yoga for almost five years. There are no mirrors, no one is watching to see how well you perform, and best of all there is no judgment. Ever watch a child act out his imagination? This is all too rare of an occurrence, as children today seem to be overwhelmed, overscheduled, and overstressed—shuttled from one activity to the next, endlessly trying to catch up with life itself. Gone are the days of random play and being in the moment...

HOLISTIC HEALTH CARE

When the Pediatrician Says GER

From the Article:

During her pregnancy, Sarina ate all the right things, attended maternity yoga classes, and perused a nice stack of parenting books, but she was unprepared for what lay ahead. She and Garrett bragged about how peaceful their newborn daughter was but their bubble soon burst. Within weeks their baby was crying inconsolably several times a day, sleeping poorly and waking with screams, spitting up, fussing at the breast, and experiencing occasional watery stools.

Advice came from all directions. Sarina heard about gassy foods and gave up broccoli. They tried some drops for gas, constant carrying, classical music, and even a vibrating chair but nothing brought any relief to their daughter or to their own wired nerves and baggy, bloodshot eyes. The doctor assured them there was nothing wrong with their baby...

About the Author :

Science is Dr. Palmer's first love and continuing inspiration. Her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois was in chemistry with a minor in biology. While attending the National College of Chiropractic, Palmer received a Bachelor of Science in human biology as she received her Doctor of Chiropractic.

Prior the birth of her son, Dr. Palmer ran a successful chiropractic practice for eleven years, focusing on nutrition and women's health issues. Her practice emphasized diagnosis, research, and patient education.

With the birth of Dr. Palmer's son in 1995, she was confronted with his severe health complications and astounded by the extreme lack of accurate or helpful information from doctors or books. Her usual passion for research turned toward infant health and parenting. Her extensive reviews of science and medical research revealed huge conflicts between what is found scientifically and what is standard protocol in pediatric offices. Her research in this area led to writing Baby Matters.

Dr. Palmer has led attachment parenting support groups for five years, also coordinating the various groups throughout San Diego County. She has also served as an instructor in anatomy and physiology and a research associate for drugless cancer therapy research. She currently spends her time consulting in infant nutrition and attachment parenting, writing parenting articles and books, speaking to family and professional audiences, and being a wife and mother.

CHIROPRACTIC FOR LIFE

Chiropractic Care for Children

From the Article:

Chiropractors have been caring for children for more than a 100 years. Many common childhood ailments will respond to this safe, natural form of health care. More and more parents—especially those who are already chiropractic patients themselves—are seeking chiropractic care for their children.

This article attempts to answer the questions asked by many parents about their children’s spinal health.

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is based on the important relationship between the spine and the nervous system. One of the most basic ideas in chiropractic is that dysfunction in the spine and its joints can lead to dysfunction within the nervous system—and since the nervous system controls and coordinates all of the systems of the body, spinal dysfunction can have wide ranging effects on the body’s health. Chiropractors are trained to evaluate and adjust this spinal dysfunction.

Why do my kids need chiropractic?

A child encounters many physical stresses during their growing years. The resulting problems in children’s spines can occur at almost any point in their development and growth...

PREGNANCY & BIRTH

Your Inner Wisdom: Trusting the Process for Natural Birthing

From the Article:

It is sometimes called “our inner knowing,” “the gut feeling,” or “the wisdom within.” Whatever its name, the experience is universal. It is a feeling, a word, an image that stands out bolder than the regular stream of conscious thought and it makes a slightly deeper impression on our minds. It will continue to guide us, depending on our receptive attention to it.

Natural processes like pregnancy and birth are dependant upon a woman’s ability to trust in her inner knowing. This wisdom leads women to support and trust the process rather than work against it. In this way, nature is allowed to take its course.

For centuries, this very intuition led women in their decisions for their own health and the well being of their families. Relying on its ageless wisdom, women listened to its promptings and trusted its guidance.

THE OUTER WOMB

Why We Never Ask:“Is It Safe For Infants to Sleep Alone?”

From the Article:

The “debate” about where infants should sleep and which hazards associated with different sleep environments are worth solving has never taken place on a level social or scientific playing field. Moral beliefs about how and where infants and children should sleep in western cultures are both tied to, and reflected in, the methods and conditions used to study infant sleep. Data collected on solitary, bottle-fed infants currently serves as the “gold standard” in research methodology, despite the fact that both breastfeeding and forms of cosleeping are reaching historic highs. Thus, the pediatric sleep research community increasingly finds itself at odds with the behavior of the families it attempts to serve. This incongruity illustrates how tenacious traditional social and medical values and conventional understandings of infant sleep have become and why contemporary families feel so confused, frustrated, and unsupported.

NUTRITION

Will Play for Donuts

From the Article:

The moment we signed up our kids for Fall Soccer, guess what happened first? Snacks. Snack schedules. Snack emails. Snack discussions. The same thing happened during flag football, field hockey, baseball, and basketball seasons. I scratched my head over this. The primary reason for having our children in recreational sports is to provide them a positive sporting experience—not another opportunity for recreational eating. And by the way, “snack” doesn’t really mean snack. It means Party Food. We’re pressured to bring the children not only a post-game “snack,” but also
a half-time snack.

And although the coach and parents have agreed the food would be healthy, it’s nowhere close. So far it has been Oreos, Chips Ahoys, organic “Oreos,” chips, organic chips, cupcakes, etc. And then just this last weekend, it was a mountain of chocolate-frosted Dunkin Donuts—with sprinkles on top. This, all in addition to bananas and orange slices. At a practical level, we’re talking about children expending maybe 200 calories, then consuming 300 calories in parentprovided snacks...

About the Author:

Roth received her training to practice Health Counseling at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (in partnership with Columbia University Teachers College), which is the only nutrition school integrating all the different dietary theories—combining the knowledge of traditional philosophies with modern concepts like the USDA food pyramid, the glycemic index, the Zone and raw foods. My certification is pending and will be completed in June. For more information about my education, please go to www.integrativenutrition.com.

MeMe Roth is a regular expert guest on the topics of "Obesity" and "Junk Food" in mass media across the country and abroad including FOX News' Bill O'Reilly and Neil Cavuto shows, CNN, MSNBC, Inside Edition, and even a spoof on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, as well as provided regular quotes in The New York Times, USA Today, The New York Post, US Weekly, TIME, BusinessWeek and more. She's known for no-nonsense, politically irreverent, unflinching commentary on America's obesity crisis.

MeMe Roth made her career in marketing and public relations--as a VP for Edelman Public Relations, and Ogilvy Public Relations before that. In the nineties during Jack Welch's tenure, Ms. Roth headed up PR for one of the twelve General Electric Companies, GEIS. Over the years, there were stints at Philips Electronics, IBM and a number of Net start-ups. In 2006, Ms. Roth handled publicity for the gathering of Nobel Laureates in Petra, Jordan on behalf of King Abdullah II, Holocaust-survivor, author and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel, and Publicis.

Personally, Ms. Roth comes from a long line of obesity and understands, firsthand, the full health ramifications of and challenges associated with obesity, including maintaining her own healthy weight.

In addition to her private Integrative Nutrition Health Counseling Practice, leading National Action Against Obesity and actively advocating for education and enforcement policies to stem the surge of obesity, Ms. Roth will soon release "Obesity Action Hero: America's Plan to Cut Obesity by 50%" and currently is working on a book about the concept of "Secondhand Obesity," a phrase she coined. Considering 90% of food-buying decisions are made by women, Ms. Roth emphasizes women as a means to reverse the obesity crisis. To underscore the need to rear healthy girls into healthy women and continue that cycle, Ms. Roth hosts an annual "Wedding Gown Challenge," where women are encouraged to enter into marriage at a healthy weight, and maintain it over their lifetimes.

Ms. Roth has worked for years attempting to remove junk food from schools and is involved with numerous school lunch improvement projects and legislation as well as serving as a consultant on the forthcoming documentary film, "Two Angry Moms" about junk food in school. Expect to see Ms. Roth's appearances in soon-to-be released documentaries on America's Obesity Crisis and the escalating ban on Trans Fats.

"At this stage--and given the current health climate in our country--I have combined my personal and professional history together to do whatever I can to encourage people to reconsider the cultural memes that have ushered in an era of obesity. For every $1 the USDA spends on nutrition education, food marketers spend $24. NAAO was launched to fight marketing with marketing--along with strong peer pressure for change."

MeMe Roth, married mother of two, earned her degree in Journalism from the Grady College of Journalism, University of Georgia. She's part of the Integrative Nutrition Health Counselor program with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and Columbia University Teachers College. Ms. Roth is a member of myriad industry organizations including BetterSchoolFoods, Two Angry Moms, BanTransFat.com, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI)'s National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) Coalition, as well as CSPI's Global "Dump Soft Drinks" Campaign and "Food Marketing to Children" Work Group.

PARENTING

“For the Sake of the Children” - Cooperative CO-Parenting During and After Divorce

From the Article:

In 20 years of being a family child care provider and 12 years of conducting parenting workshops I have seen parents struggle with and children suffer from uncooperative CO-parenting.

Years ago when couples found themselves in an unhappy, even unhealthy marriage they usually remained married “for the sake of the children.” Today unworkable marriages dissolve in divorce. At first a divorce usually meant Dad moved out. The kids lived with Mom and visited Dad every other weekend. Now joint custody is often awarded to parents when both parents desire to raise the children. Depending on the maturity of both parents involved, joint custody can mean, at best, both Mom and Dad sharing the nurturing of their mutual children. At worst, it can mean two parents dividing time with their children 50/50 as if children were marital property with each parent fighting to make sure they each get and do exactly their share...

FAMILY LIFE

How to Tickle with Dignity

From the Article:

My son vividly remembers the day his first son told him to back off. My son wasn’t trying to do anything intrusive; he was tickling his boy like he’s always done. But, on this day, his son asserted himself in a way that gave my son a new perspective. More on that later...

Family play should always be all-inclusive. That means our family members should play games by choice and those games should be noncompetitive. If the family fun is open to all members than family unity will grow. We should avoid any situation were someone is favored, or on the “inside,” because then rivalries will ensue as family members compete for attention and affection...

MOVING AND LEARNING

Playing is More Than Just Fun-Benefits of Proper Motion to Develop Healthy Minds and Bodies

From the Article:

Having fun with your child is important, but good play routines can last a lifetime. It is a parent’s responsibility to stimulate their child’s developing nervous system with every motion and activity. These motions are helpful in developing neurological pathways. Parents also need to remember that although“educational” video games have been developed for babies up to young adults, they do not stimulate the same neural pathways in the brain as active play activities. Play activities should include stimulation of all five senses (sight, touch, sound, smell, and taste)...

MIND-BODY

Celebrating Changes

From the Article:

Breaths come and breaths go. Tens of thousands of times, every day of your life, your breath changes its direction. The events of your life come and go, too. Nothing stays constant. Everything is changing.

The attitude that you choose to take toward this everchanging nature of your life—how well you learn to let go of what was and move on with what is—has a huge impact on your health and well-being. It is a significant determinant of how long, and how well, you live.

Here’s the choice you have: You can be frustrated by what you believe has been lost, and feel pained and sad about it. You can spend a lifetime grieving over an unsatisfactory childhood, a blown opportunity, or a relationship that went wrong. Or you can celebrate the unending gift that life offers—the gift of perpetual renewal, every breath of your life...

INFORMED CHOICE

Pediatric Drug Testing and the Aware Parent

From the Article:

Harry Shirkey, a medical practitioner, coined the term“therapeutic orphans” more than 40 years ago to describe how children are overlooked in medical research; his observations remain true today. Despite the best efforts of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), nothing has really changed.

Guesstimating Medicine

The fact is that the majority of drugs given to children have never been tested specifically for them. Physicians are prescribing drugs based on a “best guess” as to the dosage, efficacy, and even safety.

It’s becoming clearer to federal regulators and physicians alike that children are not just “small adults.” With their bodies in different stages of development, they process medication differently: sometimes faster, sometimes slower, and sometimes turning it into poison. Their body chemistry has not fully matured and yet adult drugs are being prescribed to children on a regular basis despite these facts. Dr. Joseph M. Wiley, Chief of Pediatrics at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore says,“If you extrapolate from an adult dose to a pediatric dose, you may be right…you may be wrong.”...

GRATITUDE

The Law of Prayer

From the Article:

For centuries, mankind has lived with prayer. When most people think of prayer, they think of asking for help from a Higher Source, to aid them in the traumas or tragedies or anxious circumstances of their lives. That is great, and who could be against that form of prayer? Other people get inspired and elated with things, and they say, “Oh! Thank You! Thank You, God! Thank You, Universe! Thank You!” Their prayer is one of elation. Commonly, the masses pray when they are really happy or really sad...

Freedom for Family Wellness Extravaganza

From the Article:

The first Freedom for Family Wellness Extravaganza lived up to its name as authors, activists, practitioners, and parents gathered to hear the science behind the consciousness shift that supports vitalism in conscious conception, birth, and child development. This included presentations on epigenetics, the power of emotions in healing; the need to return to natural birthing, the importance of informed choices, symptoms as a sign of wellness and the amazing innate ability everyone shares in facilitating our own healing through intention, awareness and conscious choices. The Extravaganza was held from May 8–11 at the Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn’s Landing overlooking the Delaware River...
